Zhengzhou International Urban Design Conference Proceedings of 2018 published the thesis project of Architect Shafique Rahman under the title of “Spatial Analysis” As a Tool for Culture Lead Regeneration. A Case Study of Dhaka: Nilkhet Book Market”.

With the initiation of rapid expansion, globalization, and mega-projects, our cities are turning into homogenous, soulless, and scarce places. Organically grown public places in developing cities are increasingly regenerated to make a substantial contribution to the messy vitality of populous urban hubs. Regeneration of old public places requires strong synchronicity with its origin to keep up cultural identity. However, this is not yet well documented to what extent the original development's characteristics could influence the regeneration. The research attempts to frame up a process of urban regeneration. The framework has evolved from a careful synthesis of several implemented regeneration projects. And the innovation was added through a method, "Spatial Analysis", which entirely depends on the space quality and architectural characteristics of any cultural development.  And the process found expression through the regeneration of a uniquely characterized and historic marketplace, namely Nilkhel Book Market, located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. More specifically, it is an investigation of spatial characteristics of organic development in order to re-evaluate their potential to consider them as a tool for culture-lead regeneration.
